Since 1986, Double E has used carbon fiber as a shaft housing material
in the paper, film, and foil converting industries. Companies often
turn to carbon fiber shafts to
reduce operator lifting injuries, but these shafts also help companies
achieve greater line speeds by reducing
deflection and vibration. High performance shafts directly improve
productivity and increase machine throughput
and profitability. With over 30 years of experience is shaft building,
Double E’s design is second to
none. A proprietary “polyprene” bladder material,
for example, drastically reduces bladder failure and increases shaft
life. If the bladder does fail, replacement is quick and easy with
Double E’s simple but extremely robust
journal fastening system. Double E provides air activated lug or strip
shafts, as well as differential rewind shafts
and mechanical shafts for demanding applications.
Double E safety chucks complement the shaft line. They slide open with
a patented push–button
mechanism. The sliding action reduces finger jamming accidents common
with tilting models, and guarantees
roll security. A patented spline design keeps shaft journals seated
without any movement, allowing faster web
speeds with less vibration. When combined with a lightweight,
high-strength carbon fiber shaft, heavier roll
weights can be run at faster speeds. Chucks can be flange-mounted or
foot-mounted, fixed or with side-lay
adjustment. Side-lay adjustment models allow accurate roll positioning
with an easy-to-operate hand-wheel,
with horizontal range up to four inches. Unique options of Double E
chucks include fixed drive shafts, swivel
bases to correct baggy web edges, and air operation.
For shaft-less applications, the Double E
Company’s DF-2000® torque-activated core chuck can be
used
in the lightest to heaviest tension processes. It uses internal rollers
which travel up and down bi-directional
ramps for expansion and retraction of its smooth jaws (which
won’t damage cores). The rolling mechanism
ensures concentric expansion and eliminates the need for lubrication.
No lubrication means little, if any, dust
accumulation in the chuck, so jamming and maintenance are nearly
non-existent. Rolls run smoothly and
material can be run down to the last wrap.
